UPDATE FROM GROUND TEAM
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh
Khalsa Aid has sent their first team to identify the current situation in
Tamil Nadu, Andaman Islands, Nikobar Island and Sri Lanka. Khalsa aid has
agreed to organise and fund the following active projects and is providing
immediate funds and supplies.
Tamil Nadu - Cuddalore District
Over 400 families are homeless without shelter. No major agencies are
present here. Khalsa Aid is organising 400 tents to be made locally in
Bangalore and personally hand deliver these to the affected families this
week.
Six nursery schools have been destroyed and Khalsa Aid is consulting
contractors to rebuild these schools. We are also furnishing existing
nurseries which are badly in need of books, toys, learning materials and
basic furnishings such as mats.
Khalsa Aid has also agreed to partially fund the construction of 112 new
homes for families that had lost theirs due to the Tsunami. This project is
a joint initiative with Sri Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle in Bombay and
other Sikh groups, including the local Gurdwara in Chennai.
Andaman/Nikobar Islands
Khalsa Aid arrived in Port Blair this morning and was greeted by the local
Sikh community and officials. An assessment will be carried out over the
next few hours to determine the specific requirements with which Khalsa Aid
can assist.
A further flight is planned this afternoon to reach the Car Nikobar Island
where there is a strong Sikh community. The local Sikhs are in a state of
shock at how their "mini punjab" has been destroyed. Over 300 families have
been affected in this area and over 70 Sikh homes have been destroyed.
Khalsa Aid is travelling with the Sri Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle,
Mumbai.
Sri Lanka
Khalsa Aid received a request for 500 shelter tents from Sri Lankan
charities and are having these made at factories in Bangalore this week.
These will be delivered to the affected families early next week once a
Khalsa Aid sevadar is available to supervise this.
